Zila Parishad,Block Samiti polls: 63% turnout,clashes at 23 places

SAD and Congress workers clashed at 23 different polling booths in the Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections on Sunday evening which registered about 63% turnout.

SAD and Congress workers clashed at 23 different polling booths in the Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections on Sunday evening which registered about 63% turnout.

At Haul village,Congress workers alleged that SAD supporters were coming along with a senior citizen to help him cast his vote which was objected to by the Congress workers as the SAD workers were coming inside the polling booth. The argument turned violent with the Congress workers alleging that they were attacked with swords.

Congress workers Jagtar Singh and Swarn Singh have been admitted to Civil Hospital,Khanna,while SAD workers Parminder Singh and Ravinder Singh suffered minor injuries. Police were yet to register a case and were investigating the matter.

At Bhadla village,Congress workers alleged booth capturing by outside SAD workers. Similar complaints were registered from Khanpur village in Dehlon area.

Congress candidate Hardev Pal Singh alleged that the SAD candidate was getting fake voting done at Phullanwal village.

However,Police Commissioner Ishwar Singh said nothing wrong was found at the spot. “At Mundian village,we arrested one Varinder Singh who was stopping police from performing their duty,” he added.

District Congress president Pawan Dewan,however,alleged,“Our men were beaten up at Phullanwal village last night as well.”

Clashes were reported from Gopalpura,Jasdev Nagar,Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar area and even from Nankana Sahib Public School where a booth for Gill village voters had been established. At this school,workers of both parties clashed and suffered minor injuries.

However,the police authorities maintained that overall,the polling went off peacefully in the district.
