Various workers unions will stage protests outside the offices of deputy commissioners across the state against the implementation of Punjab Social Security Law 2010 and Damages to Public and Private Property Law 2010. The amended laws were approved by the Cabinet in October last year and are now reportedly in the final stages of implementation. Lakhwinder Singh, president of Karkhana Mazdoor Union, said: The changes made in the laws are not in favour of the public at large. Under the Damages to Public Property Law,prior permission from DCs is a must to hold rallies, which is a complete diktat. At the same time, the Social Security Law gives the police force special powers for search operations. These powers will be misused for sure. Singh added: We fear once these laws are implemented, the workers and the public at large will be harassed. While workers had been staging demonstrations in various parts of the state since October, they will hold a joint protest on Tuesday. In Ludhiana alone, nearly 30 unions will protest outside the DC office. Workers had been organising rallies and blocking traffic, damaging public property in many cases. To curb the same,Police Commissioner Ishwar Singh, said the new changes were being formulated, but the notification was yet to come.
