Members of the Karkhana Mazdoor Union,Punjab, will stage a protest outside the office of Deputy Commissioner here on Monday and present a memorandum to him which has been signed by close to 5,000 people.

Lakhwinder Singh, president of the union, said,“The state government announced an ambitious plan called Mission Ludhiana. But no one has bothered to provide even the basic necessities in labour colonies of this city. These are the colonies in which lakhs of labourers live and work day and night. It is due to their efforts that the industry of this town is flourishing. But they face problems like broken lanes, open sewerage,no health facility, overhead hanging live electricity wires, and unavailability of clean drinking water.”

Singh particularly drew attention to the areas like Rajiv Gandhi Colony,Giaspura and Dhandari Kalan. “We have approached the administration many times. In these colonies people live in conditions where no human can live. However,no one cares to listen to our demands. Hence,we have decided to launch a protest and ensure that the right of the people is given to them,” he added.
