Two major crimes committed within the span of a month and the Ludhiana police is yet to make any major advances towards solving either case. On April 13,Avtar Singh Tari,a close aide of Namdhari sect head Satguru Jagjit Singh, was shot dead in broad daylight. Next on May 19,assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Gurdial Singh in-charge of police chowki in Shaheed Bhagat Singh received three bullet injuries while trying to arrest two youth. The ASI is still battling for his life at the Dayanad Medical College and Hospital. Till date, the police have not been able to make any arrests despite the fact that they have a video recording of the accused in action and posters in this connection have been pasted all over the town. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Yurinder Singh said: Crime in the city is very much under control. Tracing blind murders take time. The Avtar Singh Tari murder is a blind murder and while we do have some names mentioned in the FIR,we are yet to question these people. We need strong evidence. The family of Avtar Singh had named Thakur Dalip Singh, the nephew of Satguru Jagjit Singh,as the brain behind this murder. Commissioner of Police (Ludhiana),Ishwar Singh said: We have no hang-ups in admitting where we have failed. But we have been able to solve almost 90 per cent of murders registered with us. Ludhiana has a huge population and in many cases,it is the family or close ones who commit the crime. The Tari case is being investigated in a highly scientific manner as we do not have any clue at hand. ASI Gurdial Singhs incident was unfortunate as the policeman failed to anticipate that the arrested youths could suddenly come up with a gun and shoot him. But we have identified the accused. The search for them has been intensified and we will arrest them soon, he added.
