The menace of illegal liquor sale is spreading its tentacles in the city.

The menace of illegal liquor sale is spreading its tentacles in the city. In a naka set up on Sunday, the Anti-Liqour Smuggling Cell and the local police nabbed two people and recovered 25 cases of illegal liquor.

Harbans Singh, incharge of the cell, said a scooter mechanic from Tarkhana village,Gurmukh Singh, was caught with the 25 cases in a car on the outskirts of the city.

In another case,Excise Inspector Dewan Chander and two other officials nabbed another liquor smuggler on Tajpur Road who at first tried to flee from the police. However the accused was given a chase and caught with illegal liquor, which he claimed, was for Gandhi Nagar area. It has also come to light that illegal liquor is being frequently smuggled to small towns like Macchiwara and Chamkuar Sahib.

“Selling illegal liquor is a very lucrative business and the smugglers stand to make huge profits through them. And to this the fact that the smugglers have to just pay some fine depending upon the number of bottles they are carrying. They do that right on the spot and then get back to their business once again. Thus this business keeps going on which undercuts the sale of legal liquor vends that pay huge amounts of excise duty to the state government during auctions to get licenses for the vends,” Harbans Singh said.
