Trains halted due to NRMU protest

A protest by members of the Northern Railwaymen’s Union (NRMU) over the appointment of a technician as a peon led to much harassment of the general public,after the protesters stopped the Shan-e-Punjab and Ajmer-Amritsar Express on the Ludhiana-Delhi line. Many other trains also had to be halted midway.

Many other trains also had to be halted midway.

The trains were stopped for about an hour and a half from 12.15 pm to 1.40 pm. The union members sat on the railway line crossing near Jagraon bridge.

Daljit Singh,joint secretary of NRMU said,“One employee,who is a member of the Uttar Railwaymen’s Union (URMU),has been given a peon’s job while he is a technician.

The job has been given to the employee by RS Gupta,a senior divisional mechanical engineer.”

Gupta however denied the allegation. NRMU members later held a meeting with Gupta to resolve the issue.
