Three candidates from the city have succeeded in clearing the civil services exam 2009,the results of which were declared on Thursday. Prabhjot Singh,a resident of Salim Tabri,ranked 16 in the prestigious exam,while Jasmeet Singh ranked 384. Both cleared the exam in their third attempt. Amanpreet Kaur secured the 701st rank in her fourth attempt.
Talking to Newsline,Satwant Kaur,mother of Prabhjot,said,Last time,he cleared the main exam but could not succeed in the interview. But this time we were absolutely sure that he will get through. Prabhjot has completed his B.Tech from Guru Nanak Engineering College,Ludhiana. Since childhood,his aim was to become an IAS officer. He served in different companies while preparing for the exam. Last year,he took formal coaching from an institute in Chandigarh. He is currently in Ahmadabad working with ISRO, said his father Gurdev Singh,Superintendent,Post Offices,Ferozepur. Prabhjot has a sister who works as a lieutenant at Military Nursing Base Hospital in Delhi.
Jasmeet left his job in Bangalore last year to prepare full time for the exam. And it bore fruit. His father Jaswinder Singh is a retired bank officer and mother Surinder Pal Kaur is principal of Government Girls Senior Secondary School here. Gill studied in Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School,BRS Nagar till Class XII and completed his B.Tech from Thapar Engineering College,Patiala. He said,After serving for more than a year at Bangalore in a software company,I started preparing for the exam in Delhi,and turned out to be third-time lucky.
On asking why he opted for civil services over engineering,he said,There are more challenges in India than anywhere else. I love challenges.
Amanpreet said she has fulfilled the dream of her late mother,and owes it to her stepmother and father. Her father Rashpal Singh is a deputy chief engineer in the state electricity board. About 10 years ago,I lost my mother Paramjit Kaur to cancer. My father remarried,and my second mother Dr Neeru Preet helped me fulfill the dream of my mother.
Amanpreet,who has been a state-level hockey player,graduated from Government College for Girls-11 in Chandigarh and then did her MA in Sociology from Panjab University. She also qualified the UGC-NET.
She is currently an employee of State Bank of Patiala and is on leave,which she took to prepare for the exam.
