The shiromani Akali Dal Beopar Wing head has supported the Marriage Palace Association which is protesting against the hike in tax on category A marriage palaces. Madan Lal Bagga, chairman of this wing, said the tax was too exorbitant and he would arrange a meeting of the association with the Chief Minister or Deputy Chief Minister so as to get some relief.
Bagga himself was seen speaking that the tax was an additional burden on the association which already has to pay many taxes to the state government.
Earlier, marriage palaces were paying a lump sum of Rs 50,000 as VAT for one function while Rs 10,000 for liquor permit. However, this tax has been hiked to Rs 2.35 lakh ( including VAT,liquor permit and luxury tax) for the category A marriage palaces which are not more than 15 in Ludhiana.
The members have been told to pay hiked tax all of a sudden while they had booked functions six months back. Gurpreet Singh, general secretary of the Punjab Marriage Palace Association, said,Today they have covered category A marriage palaces and tomorrow will come the turn of B category as well. So we have to take a stand and, moreover, the hike is exorbitant.
The category A marriage palaces are not being given liquor licences for the functions booked unless they pay the hiked amount of VAT. In addition to this,Singh said that they had been told to collect luxury tax from florists, decorators,DJs etc and pay it to the department. The department should collect luxury tax directly from these service providers rather than asking the palaces to collect the tax and pay to the department,he added.
