Speed governors: Transport body threatens to go on indefinite strike from May 8

The city-based transporters held a protest in the city and burnt an effigy of the transport minister of Punjab.

The city-based transporters held a protest today in the city and burnt an effigy of the transport minister of Punjab,Master Mohan Lal,for not exempting them from installation of speed governors in commercial vehicles.

Ludhiana Goods Transport Association (LGTA) protested at Transport Nagar and gave a deadline of eight days to the government for the said exemption.

Charanjit Singh Luhara, president of LGTA,said: ”If the government does not fulfill our demands,we will start an indefinite strike from May 8.” Jagdish Singh Jassowal, press secretary of LGTA said: ”The government has asked us to install speed governors in the trucks but we are not willing to do this. Speed governors decrease the speed of the trucks to 65 kmph from 80 kmph. The truck companies have also refused guarantee for the trucks if we install the speed governors. So we request the government to not impose this condition on us and exempt us from it. ” Punjab Mini Bus Operator’s Association (PMBOA) and the District Bus Owner’s Association (DBOA) also joined the cause of truck and tempo operators and held a protest at a bus stand.

Jasbinder Singh Grewal, general secretary of PMBOA,said: ”This technical partcost more than Rs 2,000 but there is a syndicate of 4 or 5 manufacturers who want to sell it at Rs 10,000-12,000 per piece to the operators. It seems that some political bigwig and bureaucrat’s personal people have taken the agency to sell this part to make a profit.”
