Though SAD gained a majority in the zila parishad and block samiti elections, the results of which were declared on Tuesday, its share has been reduced considerably,as compared to the last term.

In the zila parishad elections,SAD had won all the 25 seats in the previous term, but this year the number has been reduced to 22,as the party lost its Gill,Kaddon and Ramgarh Sardara seats to the Congress. At Gill,Tanvir Singh Raniya won the election, while Harneet Kaur and Ranjeet Kaur won the Kaddon and Ramgarh Sardara seats, respectively.

In the block samiti polls,SAD won 171 seats, while the Congress grabbed only 43,and 12 were won by Independent candidates. However,in the last term,SAD’s share out of 226 seats was over 205. The count has dropped by more than 35 seats.

Malkit Singh Dakha, district Congress rural president said,”We have performed well, despite large scale booth rigging. SAD’s vote share has dropped and Congress’ has increased. In many seats,SAD won by a very slim margin”.

He added,“Rural elections are contested just to show our existence, otherwise, voters don’t pay much heed to them”.

However,Santa Singh Umedpuri,SAD’s rural president, said,“Last year, all the 12 block samiti chairperson were from SAD,and the same will happen, this year. So,a few seats lost here and there, does not matter”.
