Residents of over five colonies on Wednesday protested against the Aggarwal Co-operative Society of Aggar Nagar and Raghunath Enclave, etc, for closing a gate on the Raghunath Chowki side.
During the protest, women from Ghai colony,Ashapuri,Sher-e-Punjab colony and other areas broke the stairs constructed by the society on the way to the gate. They also hired a crane to demolish the gate. The police intervened and the matter was postponed till Thursday, when a meeting will be held between the members of the society and residents of the colonies. The protest ended with the residents locking the Aggar Nagar gate from their side.
The gate towards Raghunath Chowki was a shortcut availed by the residents of more than eight colonies to reach Ferozepur Road and other areas. For the last few days, the society has constructed stairs towards the entrance so that no vehicles can pass.
Mohinder Aggarwal,a society member, said: Ours is a privately managed society and we maintain our roads, streetlights, etc on our own. This gate was constructed for the convenience of the pedestrians. But now people have began commuting in their cars from this gate. Not only accidents have taken place, but the gate also lets anti-social elements come over to this side. So,we decided to close this gate for traffic.
