Satish Chandra, principal secretary health,Punjab, has asked all the Asha workers to work hard or face the music. The Asha workers have been appointed by the Health department for the welfare of pregnant women and children. There is one Asha worker for 1,000 people. Talking to Newsline,Chandra said,“There are 17,000 Asha workers in the state. They are given incentives for bringing cases of pregnancy and taking care of children etc. At certain places, these are earning between Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,000 while at some places they are only earning Rs 250 to Rs 300 per month. This reflects their work. So I have instructed all the officers supervising them to make them work hard or terminate their services.” The Principal Secretary, today inspected special camps organised for the free medical check up of pregnant mothers and children, said,“I found the work of Ludhiana district satisfactory. However,at certain places the ANM’S work also needs to be strengthened. The working of ANMs is lagging behind in Gurdaspur district.” Anupam Bhagria
