Out of a total of 58,000 job card-holders under MNREGA scheme in Ludhiana, only 65 have done a 100 days job in the past year in Ludhiana. This was revealed in the district level vigilance monitoring committee held in Bachat Bhawan on Friday. The meeting was chaired by Ludhiana MP Manish Tiwari.
ADC(D) Pardeep Aggarwal said,The workers are getting Rs 300 per day from private market while under MNRGEA they get Rs 152 per day as daily wage. So job card holders are not interested to work under the scheme. Majority work for few days until they get a daily wage job from the private market.
Until recently, daily wages under MNREGA were Rs 127 per day which was revised to Rs 152. In states like Bihar,UP and Rajasthan it is still Rs 127 per day. However economic condition in those states is different compared to that existing in Punjab.
Majority of the job card-holders have worked for less than 100 days, only 65 cleared the list of mandatory job hours of MNREGA. Due to few workers, many development projects in villages are pending. Tiwari however stated that boards should be displayed at the project showing when the work was started and when it will be completed.
A helpline for MNREGA was also started on Friday: 9988400403. In the meeting it was revealed that in 2011-12,Rs 11.67 crores came under MNREGA scheme and so far only Rs 5.64 crore has been spent.
