Mahavir Chakra recipient Major Bhupinder Singh’s wife Sohinder Kaur was taken a back to see the sorry state of the memorial of her husband, near Government College for Girls. The army tank on which the statue stands has been reportedly encroached by a family. The family members even informed Kaur that they were paying around Rs 500 per month as rent to a Municipal Corporation employee to use the tank as their rest house. Kaur, who at present lives in New Delhi, visited the city to see the memorial site. Apart from the encroachment, the wild growth of grass around and filth at the site surprised the 1965 martyr’s wife.

Kaur said,“I met PWD Minister Sharanjeet Singh Dhillon, who was sorry for the mismanagement. I am really upset to see the condition of the memorial site of my husband, who laid his life at a young age in a bid to protect the country. I am disheartened to see the casual attitude of people, who instead of respecting the martyr, are spreading filth and even encroaching the site”.

Kaur,in a letter submitted to the minister, stated that if the administration was unable to maintain the site, then she was willing to take up the task to maintain the site to uphold the dignity of the martyr.

The wall at the end of the memorial is reportedly being used as a urinal. Sources said that drug addicts found the place safe at night to indulge in their miscreant activities.

Kaur also requested the minister to change the location of the memorial, but Dhillon said that the site could not be changed, however, that they would appoint an architect to beautify the area. Soon after Kaur’s visit,a team was sent to cut the wild grass and evict the encroachers.
