The local court today ordered the release of 39 of the 42 migrant labourers who were arrested by the local police following the December 3 and 4 clashes. The rest will also be set free soon.

The local court today ordered the release of 39 of the 42 migrant labourers who were arrested by the local police following the December 3 and 4 clashes. The rest will also be set free soon.

This freedom for the workers however comes after they were kept in custody for almost 48 days, booked under sections like 307,186,332,423,436,120B,148 and 149 of the IPC. Three of the total arrested were minors. The minors have been lodged in the Brostal.

Interestingly the local police that packed off these migrants like sardines and cracked down on them with the help of Punjabi youth has now given to the court in writing that nothing substantial was found against these people. All this comes after brutally beating up these arrested migrants in full public view.

When contacted,DIG Dr SS Chauhan says,“The court has discharged these people after we did not find any thing substantial against them. However this does not mean that the investigation into this case will end for after all we all did see how law and order situation was taken into hands by some migrants and we still need to book the real culprits.”

Notable here is that on the night of December 3,a group of migrants approached the Focal Point police for registration of an FIR against what is now being known as bikers’ gang. This gang,as per the migrants, looted them on regular basis. The area police which was at that time busy is preparations for the Ashutosh Maharaj gathering did not give the migrants a hearing who then went berserk, holding a dharna at night. The dharna by next morning turned violent with migrants pelting the police with stones and even holding up a train. The police who opened fire could control the mob only by December 4 late afternoon and that too after the local Punjabi youth helped them out. The senior police officials then ordered the transfer of the area SHO.

A senior official on the condition of anonymity says,“This is basically a kind of goodwill gesture. The migrants have been set free for after a period of mistrust. A congenial atmosphere has been set in and moreover we do not want that our industry should suffer as a result of a bad environment.”

Twenty two bodies of workers, labourers and others have hailed this development. Union leaders like Rajvinder Singh,Lakhwinder Singh,Harjinder Singh,Gallar Chauhan,Vijay Chauhan,Vijay Narayan and others have however demanded that the missing migrants which total up to 100 should be located, guilty officials and the people should be booked.
