The Indian Medical Association (IMA),Ludhiana, celebrated the Leprosy Day by interacting with patients of leprosy at Kusht Asharam (Leprosy colony),Islamganj here on Sunday. The IMA members mingled with the leprosy patients in order to overcome the wrong stigma associated with the disease and to change the mindset of the general public.

Dr Narotam Dewan said leprosy was no more a dreaded disease and 95% persons were naturally immune against it,which meant that they could not get infected with the disease. He said the IMA,Ludhiana members were going to look into the group and individual problems of leprosy patients by meeting them. To prove that it is non-contagious IMA members will mingle with them, shake hands with them and hug them,he added.

Dr Satish Nauhria,vice-president of IMA,said that the government and the private sector companies should take initiative to provide job opportunities to these patients. There is a need to provide economic support, employment opportunities to them. Vocational training and soft loans for self-employment should be arranged for these patients by the banks and the government,so that they walk out of these prison like leprosy colonies,he said.

IMA,Ludhiana, members will be urged to contribute Rs 25 per month towards charity donation for Kusht Asharm inhabitants. The IMA felt that there should be arrangements should be made for a school for children inside the colony,a vocational training centre,a doctor’s visit to the colony everyday and a job reservation for them. Today’s programme was held in association with Punjab Youth Forum.
