Attempt to murder case pending with CBI, Kamaljeet Singh Karwal to join SAD on Sunday
In 2009, Karwal had allegedly thrashed tehsildar G S Benipal in full public view.
Kamaljeet Singh Karwal, an independent councillor from ward number 45 and once known as the right hand man of independent MLA Simarjit Singh Bains, will be joining Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Sunday. The ceremony will be attended by deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.
It is to be noted that an attempt to murder case against Karwal, Bains and their other accomplices is pending with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) since July last following the Supreme Court orders which handed over the investigation of the case to the CBI.
In 2009, MLA Bains along with independent councillor Karwal allegedly thrashed tehsildar G S Benipal in full public view. An FIR was registered with the Sadar police. Investigation in the case is now pending with CBI.
Karwal is facing charges under Section 307 (attempt to murder), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (manhandling public servants), 332 (deter public servant from official duty), 394 (causing hurt in committing robbery) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and various Sections of the Arms Act.
Sources in Akali Dal confirmed that senior party leader and spokesperson Maheshinder Singh Grewal played a crucial role in bringing Karwal to the party front.
The main aim behind the move is to weaken the hold of Simarjit Singh Bains in his constituency Atam Nagar where Karwal also enjoys good support.
Karwal was first elected as independent councillor from ward number 66 in 2007 and the Benipal thrashing incident happened in 2009. In the 2012 Ludhiana MC elections, he won as an independent councillor from ward number 45 and continued to be part of Bains group.
When contacted, Karwal confirmed that he will be joining SAD on Sunday at his Model Town residence in the presence of the deputy CM. When asked about the reason behind the shift, he said, “I want to work for the people and it is possible only if I am part of the ruling government.”
On being asked about his relation with Bains now, he said, “It is better if certain things are left unsaid. I would not like to comment on it.” When asked if SAD took the step to take him in or he took the first step, he said, “When interest is on both sides, it does not matter who took the first step. Sukhbir Badal will be here tomorrow and I will joinning SAD formally.”
On being asked about the criminal case pending against him, he said, “CBI investigation will bring out the truth.”
Sources added that Karwal has been offered a plum post in the Youth Akali Dal and Ludhiana MC House following relations turning bitter with ally BJP.
