The stalls put up by the dairy products and livestock products department of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) had everything interesting and new to offer from pizza cheese to edible packaging system at Pashu Palan Mela on Friday.

The dairy technology department for the first time displayed mozzarella cheese, used in pizzas made from buffalo milk and an enzyme called rennet. The varsity is now planning to make various ready-to-eat products from this cheese and train farmers for some value-addition purposes.

Besides, health probiotic lassi, which was being sold for Rs 15 per bottle, was an instant hit.

“This lassi has some special micro-organisms which are very good for intestines and stomach. We added rose flavour to this probiotic lassi, and people loved it,” said Dr Nitika Goyal, assistant professor, dairy technology.

The frozen yoghurt converted into ice cream using special procedures was also kept for people to taste.

However, what really surprised the visitors was the edible packaging system introduced by the Livestock Products Technology Department. It is a unique technology in which eatables like nuggets and chicken bullets were not packed with polythene but biodegradable thin film.

“This is completely biodegradable. Even if you don’t want to eat it,you throw and it will dissolve into soil within minutes, leaving zero pollution. This technology is open for sale and we will soon tie up with some company to commercialise it,” said Dr Manish Chaitley, professor and head of the department.
