Wrestler Anuj eyeing Olympic medal

After winning a silver in the 84-kg freestyle wrestling event in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games.

After winning a silver in the 84-kg freestyle wrestling event in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games,Olympian Anuj Kumar Chaudhary is now eyeing an Olympic medal.

Anuj who is an inspector with the Uttar Pradesh Police (UPP) and is presently posted at Noida,was in the state capital on Wednesday. Talking to The Indian Express,the Arjuna awardee said,“ Though I performed well in the Commonwealth Games but I wish I could have bagged a gold for my country. However,now I will be toiling hard to win laurels for my country in the 2012 Olympics.”

Anuj informed that he will not be taking part in the upcoming Asian Games as he could not give the trials for the same. “There should have been some breathing or ‘recovery’ period. I suffered a back injury during the Commonwealth Games,so I needed at least five to seven days to recover from it. But the trials were organised even before the conclusion of the Commonwealth Games.

There is no use of giving the trials when you are not fully prepared for the same,” he explained Anuj won a silver in the Commonwealth Games held at Manchester in 2002 and a gold in the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship in 2003. He bagged a bronze in the Asian Wrestling Championships held in China in 2005 and a gold at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships the same year.

He was given the Laxman award (the highest state award in sports) in 2001 and the Arjuna award in 2005. Now Anuj is waiting for a promotion in his department as Deputy SP.
