Woman raped by govt hospital worker in UP’s Shahjahanpur; accused arrested

“The victim has alleged that the accused, who was known to her from before, took advantage of the situation and sexually assaulted her on the pretext of a medical examination…,” said Devendra Kumar, Additional Superintendent of Police, Shahjahanpur.

“The accused was produced before the court, which has sent him to judicial custody. We have also informed the hospital administration about the incident, and they have initiated disciplinary action against him,” said the Station House Officer of the police station concerned.

Police added that the medical examination of the woman is being conducted.

According to police, the victim’s cousin had been admitted to the government hospital for treatment of a urinary infection. The victim and her husband had been taking turns caring for him during his stay.

On Sunday evening, police said, the woman arrived at the hospital while her husband went home to fetch some items. A few minutes after he left, she went to a nearby shop to consume liquor and reportedly lost consciousness. Locals who noticed her condition informed the police, who took her to the hospital and admitted her for treatment.

“At that time, we were not aware that the victim’s cousin was also admitted to the same hospital,” said a police officer.

The following afternoon, the woman approached the police station and accused Jai Shankar of sexually assaulting her inside the hospital premises.

The woman told police that when she regained consciousness on Monday morning, she saw Jai Shankar in the hospital and informed him that her cousin was also admitted there.

According to her statement, Shankar assured her that he would help get her examined by a doctor. On this pretext, he allegedly took her to a washroom on the hospital’s third floor, where he sexually assaulted her.
