With a mammoth Tent City for over 30,000 scouts, Lucknow gears up to host National Jamboree after 6 decades

3,500 tents, 1,600 toilets, 64 kitchens, and a 100-bed hospital – Tent City to follow all green rules

With less than two months left for Uttar Pradesh to host the 19th National Jamboree of Bharat Scouts and Guides, work on setting up a mammoth Tent City began in Lucknow’s Defence Expo Ground on Monday.

The one-of-a-kind Tent City, which will serve as the venue for the national event, will have 3,500 tents; 1,600 toilets; a 25,000-capacity arena; 64 kitchens; a 100-bed hospital; 15 dispensaries; 100 exhibition stalls; a Jamboree Market with 100 shops; a Global Village; an Adventure Zone; a Wi-Fi Zone, and a 24/7 control room.

The Tent City will host 30,000 scouts and guides from across the country, 2,000 international participants, and 3,000 officials.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the event on November 24, while President Droupadi Murmu will be the chief guest at the closing ceremony on November 28.

Uttar Pradesh is hosting the event after 61 years. The state last hosted the National Jamboree in 1964 in Prayagraj, then called Allahabad. It was the fourth edition of the event.

On Monday, a group of state ministers conducted the groundbreaking ceremony. The foundation stone was laid by Finance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna. On this occasion, the logo and mascot of the 19th National Jamboree were also unveiled.

The weeklong event will have several attractions, including the Air Force’s Air Agniveer exhibition, a HAM radio station, and an IT hub.
Participants can take part in adventure activities such as high ropes courses, ziplines, trekking, while also learning essential scouting skills, including first aid, knot tying, and survival techniques, said officials.

The cultural events at the Jamboree will showcase folk dances, drama, and music as part of the “Global Village”. “Alongside robotics and science exhibitions to introduce the youth to innovation and technology will also be held. Activities focused on social service, environmental protection, and teamwork will also be organised to inspire participants to develop into disciplined and responsible citizens,” said an official.
