Will bring 1 lakh youth who have no political link into politics: PM Modi

Warning against nepotism, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said he was planning to bring 1 lakh young people, whose families have no political connections, into politics.
He was speaking in Varanasi, his parliamentary constituency, after inaugurated a slew of projects worth over `6,700 crore in the aviation, education, health, sports, and tourism sectors. Varanasi will witness a “new era of development”, he said.

Modi congratulated Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath over development in the state, which the PM said was now known as the “Expressway state” while earlier it used to face taunts for condition of its roads. He also said UP has the most number of international airports, and soon another one will be built in Jewar. The state is becoming a major centre of investment and employment, he said.

“Ten years ago, news of government scams used to be all over the place. But today, news of the country’s development is a topic of discussion,” he said.

Modi urged youths to be cautious of “parivarvad (nepotism)”. “We will bring 1 lakh youth into politics who do not have any previous political connections.” Arguing that society can develop only when women are empowered, Modi said the government was helping women start businesses through initiatives like MUDRA loan scheme.

He announced that the government would build 3 crore new houses, which will benefit many, including women in Varanasi who have not so far come under the PM Awas Yojana.
Varanasi “is now becoming a model city of urban development”, the PM said. He said a new double-decker bridge, set to be built next to the British-era Malviya Bridge over the river Ganga, would benefit people of the city.

He said that under previous governments in UP and the Centre, Varanasi was made to “beg for development”, but now the BJP governments are working on the mantra of “Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas” and do not leave anyone out from development work.

Modi on Sunday inaugurated 23 development projects worth `6,700 crore, including 16 projects worth over `3,200 crore for Varanasi. He announced the expansion of Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi, laying the foundation stone for the expansion of the runway, the construction of a new terminal building, and other related work at an estimated cost of ?2,870 crore.

Earlier in the day, the PM had inaugurated the RJ Sankara Eye Hospital in Varanasi. “Kashi has always been a centre of religion and culture, and now it is becoming a leader in health services. Kashi is emerging as a major healthcare hub in Uttar Pradesh,” he said.

He also bowed before Kanchi Shankaracharya Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi, who was present on stage, and said: “With the blessings of the Shankaracharya, Kashi and Purvanchal have got another modern hospital.”

He paid tribute to businessman Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, after whom the hospital is named. “Jhunjhunwala ji had a unique identity in business world, but he was also deeply involved in social work,” he said. “Ten years ago, there were no block-level treatment options for serious diseases like brain fever in Purvanchal. Today, over 100 centres are operational,” he said.
