A police constable and two others have been arrested for allegedly stealing gold items and cellphones from a 30-year-old BJP Yuva Morcha leader while the latter was being taken to a hospital for treatment after an accident in Mahoba. Police said the victim, Sachin Pathak, was injured in an accident. He later died during treatment.
The arrested persons are constable Neel Kamal (30) and his associates Umesh Chandra Gupta (30) and Jawahar Patkar (40) — both residents of Mahoba, said Circle Officer (Mahoba) Ravikant Gond. Police claimed to have recovered Pathak’s gold chain, rings, and two cellphones from their possession.
Neel Kamal, a 2018-batch constable, was posted with the Police Response Vehicle (PRV) in Mahoba.
According to police, on September 16, the police control room passed information to PRV about an accident in the Karhara area in Charkhari. Acting on information, a PRV team reached the spot and found Pathak lying in a pool of blood with his motorcycle nearby. He was taken to a hospital, where he died during treatment.
When Pathaks’ family reached the hospital, they suspected it to be a case of robbery as his gold chain and rings were missing along with his cellphones. On the family complaint, police registered an FIR against unidentified persons on charges of murder and robbery.
Additional Superintendent of Police Vandana Singh said during the investigation, it was found that constable Neel Kamal’s two friends had accompanied him in the PRV to the spot. Neel Kamal and his friends sat with the victim in the back of the vehicle, while the homeguard drove, said police. On reaching the hospital, Neel Kamal’s two friends left without notifying anyone. During questioning, Neel Kamal confessed to stealing the victim’s rings and gold chains. His two friends were later arrested.
Mahoba BJP district president Awadesh Gupta confirmed that Sachin Pathak was a long-time party worker and the president of the party’s Yuva Morcha’s Charkhari mandal.
