Bypolls to Jangipur, Bilari seats on May 16

Jangipur seat fell vacant when sitting MLA and cabinet minister Kailash Yadav died in February after a brain haemorrhage, while bypoll in Bilari was necessitated following the death of 64-year-old Haji Irfan in a road accident on March 10.

Byelections to Jangipur and Bilari Assembly seats, in Ghaziabad and Moradabad districts respectively, will be held on May 16, the Election Commission of India said Tuesday. Both seats fell vacant following the death of sitting Samajwadi Party MLAs.

According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission, the notification will be issued on April 22, nominations will be filed till April 29, and withdrawal of candidature will be allowed till May 2. Polling will be held on May 16 and counting will take place on May 19.

Yadav, who held the Panchayati Raj portfolio in the Akhilesh Yadav cabinet, wielded considerable influence in eastern UP and his death was considered a setback for the SP.

Irfan, a first-time legislator, was killed when the vehicle in which he was travelling fell into a ditch. He was on way to Saifai in Etawah to attend wedding of senior SP leader and cabinet minister Shivpal Yadav’s son.

With the announcement of the election schedule, the model code of conduct has come into force with immediate effect, state Additional Chief Electoral Officer Rama Kant Pandey said.
