A police constable has been booked for the rape and murder of a Dalit woman in Agra on Saturday.

The accused, Raghvendra Singh, 26, was posted at the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Agra.

The father of the deceased woman filed the case against the cop. The police have also invoked the provisions of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against the accused.

The complainant has alleged that the constable called his daughter to his house in Agra, raped her, and then strangled her to death. He added that Singh took his daughter to the hospital after murdering her and then fled.

“Accused constable Raghvendra Singh has been suspended and raids are being conducted to trace him,” said Rakesh Kumar Singh, ACP, Agra.

The ACP added that a postmortem of the victim is being conducted by a panel of doctors and the whole exercise is being videographed.

A police officer said the victim used to work in a private hospital in Gurugram and had known the constable for the last five years. They came into contact with each other while studying at a nursing school in Jhansi and reportedly wanted to get married, he added.

“On Friday afternoon, Raghvendra called his constable friend Akash, who is also posted in Agra, and informed him that a female friend came to his house on Thursday night. Raghvendra further told his friend that the next morning (Friday), he went to the office leaving her at home. Around two hours later, when Raghvendra returned home, he found the victim hanging from a ceiling fan. He immediately brought her down and rushed her to a hospital where doctors declared her dead,” said the police officer.

A police team rushed to the hospital but by that time Singh had left the hospital. The police then reached Singh’s house and found it locked. They broke open the door and searched the house. No suicide note was found at the premises.

A police officer said, “During the preliminary inquiry, it came to light that the constable and the victim were in a relationship. Raghvendra’s father was against the marriage. Since the last month, differences cropped up between the couple. On Thursday night, the victim came down to Agra and went to the constable’s house.”
