UP: Ghazipur jailer, deputy suspended after prisoner ‘threatens’ witness

The Uttar Pradesh government has suspended the jailer and deputy jailer of Ghazipur district jail after an inmate allegedly threatened a witness over the phone.
Jailer Rakesh Kumar Verma and deputy jailer Sukhmati Devi were suspended on the basis of an inquiry conducted by the UP prison department, a senior officer said. Sources said the inquiry revealed the involvement of the jailer and deputy jailer, who allegedly aided the prisoner in making phone calls.
According to reports, a Ghazipur resident filed a complaint with the local police and district administration over two weeks ago, alleging that one Vinod Kumar, who is lodged in jail on forgery charges, called him from a mobile phone and threatened him.
A case of criminal intimidation has been registered against Vinod Kumar at the Kotwali police station in Ghazipur. No arrest has been made yet.
