A suspected cow smuggler was killed and his two associates were injured in an exchange of fire with police after they allegedly rammed their pickup van into a head constable in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district late Saturday night.

Head Constable Durgesh Kumar Singh, who sustained serious injuries, died during treatment, said Jaunpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Kaustubh.

The suspected cow smuggler who died was identified as Salman, a resident of Jaunpur, while his associates Narendra Yadav and Golu Yadav are undergoing treatment at a hospital. Their three more associates — Rahul Yadav, Raju Yadav and Azad Yadav — managed to escape, the police claimed.

The injured suspects are in a stable condition, doctors said.

According to the police, the same gang rammed their vehicle into Parauganj police outpost incharge Sub-Inspector Pratima Singh on the night of May 14, with an intention to kill her. Singh was seriously injured and is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Varanasi. A vehicle checking drive was launched to trace the pickup van involved in the attack.

The police said on Saturday evening, a police team at the Khujji crossing signalled a pickup vehicle heading towards Varanasi to stop. However, the pickup sped and struck Head Constable Durgesh Kumar Singh when he tried to stop them. Durgesh was rushed to a hospital in Varanasi, where he later died.

A police team pursued the assailants and found their vehicle abandoned at Tala Bela village in Varanasi district, officials said. They, however, learnt that the assailants were returning to Jaunpur on two motorcycles.
