A week before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s expected visit to his parliamentary constituency, UP Governor Ram Naik acted as a mediator between Chief Minsiter Akhilesh Yadav and Varanasi Mayor Ram Gopal Mohale to resolve the development issues in the temple town.
Naik called CM and the Varanasi Mayor, both, at Raj Bhawan on Thursday evening, where Mohale presented the pending development works of Varanasi before Akhilesh. The meeting continued for about one hour.
Speaking to The Indian Express, after the meeting, Governor said: “I had visited Varanasi about a month back, when the PM had come. At that time, Varanasi Mayor had told me and the CM about the pending development issues”.
Naik said Mohale had later sent him a memorandum with details of pending projects, which he forwarded to Akhilesh.
“I visited Varanasi two days back for a convocation and inquired about the development projects. Mayor told me that there has been no progress so far even after a month. Thus, I decided to intervene,” said Naik.
He also said that among other issues relating to sewage, drinking water and overbridges in Varanasi, the long closed Solid Waste Management plant in Varanasi was also discussed.
Governor said the company, which had got the contract, has left but Urban Development Department headed by Azam Khan was yet to take action.
Mohale, after the meeting, told The Indian Express: “I had been seeking time from the CM for long but failed to get it. I am grateful to Governor for giving me the opportunity to place my issues and to CM for listening to the problems with a positive mind.”
Mohale explained that solid waste management plant is non-functional as the company left it in the middle about one and a half year back.
He said the issue was raised several times with the Urban Development Department to issue a fresh contract. “However, there was no response. CM has assured to look into the issue,” said Mohale.
The other discussed were 150-km of sewage line, which has been laid without an outlet, proposed multi-level parking in the congested Chowk crossing of Varanasi, sewage treatment plant and construction of flyovers to ease the traffic congestion.
“The city draws visitors from different parts of the country as well as abroad. It is the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister.
A major problem would be solved if government takes step in starting the solid waste management plant to dispose off garbage,” Mohale said.
Governor also asked CM about the progress on celebrating “UP Divas” on January 24 and ongoing tussle between Vice Chancellor and Registrar of Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut.
