The body of a 17-year-old Dalit girl was found under mysterious circumstances inside her house in Banda district on Friday. The girl had an injury mark around her neck.

According to police, the incident came to light when her mother, who works as a cleaner at a school, returned home from work and found her daughter lying unresponsive.

Police said they received information regarding the incident in the afternoon. A team rushed to the spot and found the girl, fully clothed, lying on the floor. It was sent for a post-mortem examination.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Banda, Mavis Tak, said the postmortem examination has been completed, but the report could not ascertain the exact cause of death. “The report mentions an injury on the neck, but it is unclear how it occurred,” the ASP said.

She added that the victim’s vaginal swab has been sent to a forensic laboratory for further examination to determine whether she was sexually assaulted.

Based on a complaint filed by the girl’s mother, police have lodged an FIR against unidentified persons on charges of murder, said Station House Officer (SHO) of the local police station, Chandra Prakash Tiwari. He added that no arrest has been made so far in connection with the case.

After the post-mortem examination, the girl’s body was handed over to her family, which performed the last rites on Saturday.
