Study proposes vehicle zones on Lucknow roads

The absence of segregated zones for different types of vehicles and pedestrians causes serious traffic safety problems for commuters on almost all major routes in Lucknow

The absence of segregated zones for different types of vehicles and pedestrians causes serious traffic safety problems for commuters on almost all major routes in Lucknow, revealed a study conducted by the New Delhi-based Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) after two-year survey.

In a report,CRRI has recommended demarcation of the right-of-way (separate zones) for movement of buses,auto-rickshaws,two-wheelers,four-wheelers and pedestrians on the roads.

The LDA had tied up with CRRI in 2009 to conduct a study and prepare a plan to ensure smooth traffic on city roads. CRRI is now ready with the plan and is going to submit it to LDA on April 22 during a workshop on road-safety audit.

CRRI report is based on a study on 10 important routes in the city, including Amausi airport to Polytechnic crossing via Alambagh Charbagh,Hazratganj and Badshah Nagar; Polytechnic crossing to Engineering College crossing via Munshipulia; Engineering College to SGPGI via IT Crossing,Hazratganj and Cantonment Board; Mithaiwallah crossing to Husadian crossing via Patrakarpuram; CSMMU to Alambagh via Nakkhas and Naka Hindola.

“While collecting data in first six months,we found mixed traffic on every road as there was no segregation of zones for movement of different kind of vehicles. Mixed traffic reduces efficiency of traffic movement and creates safety problems,” said Subhash,CRRI scientist.

In addition to segregated zones,CRRI has also recommended strengthening of public transport by increasing the number of city buses and particularly on the longest Amausi-Polytechnic corridor. This would reduce traffic load on other roads.

Across the city,CRRI has found Hazratganj crossing as the busiest during daytime. “Due to lack of space,no change in its design can be made here. For commuters’ convenience, the institute has recommended installation of green pedestrian signals,” said Subhash.

CRRI has recommended pedestrian walking zones of the width of 1.5 and 3 metre on both sides of roads on all the 10 routes.

“The traffic system management plan has been prepared keeping in view the possibility of Metro rail coming to Lucknow,” he said.
