State to get its first commando school in Lucknow

The Uttar Pradesh Police would no more be dependent on the National Security Guard training centre to get skilled commandoes in the state force.

The Uttar Pradesh Police would no more be dependent on the National Security Guard (NSG) training centre to get skilled commandoes in the state force.

The state’s first Commando Training School (CTS) is going to be functional by January 11 at the newly-constructed Lucknow Reserve Police Lines under the supervision of the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terror Squad (ATS).

The ADG (Law and Order),Brij Lal,said: “To make the training flawless and efficient, the state ATS has made an arrangement with the 5 Para Brigade of the Army’s Parachute Regiment in Agra. This arrangement will continue till July.”

Last week, two fresh batches, each comprising 21 commandoes, along with four instructors have returned from Agra after completing training.

The state government had passed the order to set up CTS at Lucknow three months ago and land for the building and other infrastructure had been bought near Amausi on Kanpur Road.

“For the time being, the school has been set up at the Police Lines near SGPGI in Mohanlalganj and would be operational on Monday,” said Lal. He added that it has been decided to select candidates for training from the newly-recruited constables —most will come from the PAC.

According to ATS DIG Rajiv Krishna, who is supervising the CTS,the commandoes will undergo a four-month training. This included a one-month pre-induction course, one month of Army attachment in Agra and two months of training at the Lucknow school.

Krishna said the process of purchasing equipment for the school is on. Order had already been placed for MP5 submachine guns.

At present, the commandoes would get advanced weapon skills with A-K series rifles and the Glock pistols,he added.

Two months ago,the first batch of commando aspirants was selected from among 241 policemen. Having completed their training with the Army, they would now undergo training in skills like tactics of anti-terrorist operations,house-rescue,explosive and ordnance disposal technique etc, said Krishna.

A group of instructors is being sent to the NSG centre at Manesar for training in February. “By the end of June 2010,we expect to get a team of 200 fresh commandoes through our CTS,” he added.

According to the ADG,after basic training, the commandoes would be selected for posting in security,ATS and STF — depending on their skill and efficiency.

Those selected for ATS would undergo a special training in anti-terror operations and jungle warfare, those for STF would be trained in urban warfare, and others would get specialised training in security.
