Sangam water woes deepen,authorities in slumber

But growing demand and diminishing supply has intensified the crisis. At a time when the city area alone requires 240 million litres daily (MLD),only 170 MLD is released by the Jal Sansthan — a shortfall of 70 MLD means severe crisis in over two dozen localities.

Several localities in the Old City have already started reeling under the crisis.

Localities like Kareli,Khuldabad,Daira Shah Ajmal,Rani Mandi,Kalyani Devi,Attarsuiya,Atala,Dariyabad,Naya Pura have been facing acute water shortage for the last few weeks.

Of a total supply of 170 MLD,the Sansthan loses around 30 MLD due to leakage in supply pipes and open taps. Residents rue that the Sansthan officials have not taken up any relief measures to address the problem.

In the absence of regular water supply,residents have to resort to municipal taps,which translates into long queues.

Irked residents have now threatened to take to the streets if the administration fails to give them any respite from the crisis.

“The department has decided to provide water in tankers in localities from where we have received complaints. We have set up a control room for the purpose,” said Kamlesh Singh,General Manager of Jal Sansthan.

According to Singh,the city would get 24-hours water supply after the Rs 90-crore water project under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission is completed.

Mayor Jitendra Nath Singh,who is the chairman of Jal Sansthan,blamed the state government for the crisis stating that he had been demanding an additional fund of Rs 2 crore for the maintenance of the existing infrastructure to combat the crisis.
