S-I refuses to register complaint of eve-teasing victim, shifted

Police said the 23-year-old girl, a masters student who also teaches, was on her way to her school around 1.30 pm.

A sub-inspector (S-I), in-charge of a police outpost, has been shifted to Reserve Police Lines for allegedly turning away a victim of eve-teasing and assault by a gun-totting criminal. The incident was reported from Shankargarh police station area Wednesday.

The police swung into action only after locals gheraoed Nari Bari police outpost and demanded action against S-I Subhash Singh. While the father of accused was arrested Wednesday evening, the accused was caught Thursday. Two others have also been named in the FIR.

Police said the 23-year-old girl, a masters student who also teaches, was on her way to her school around 1.30 pm. Her school is at a distance of nearly a kilometre from her house in Nari Bari locality.

As she was walking to the school, the accused Ilyas (28) — of the same locality — tried to pull her towards his motorcycle. When she resisted, Ilyas slapped her, police said. When passers by tried to intervene, Ilyas whipped out a country-made revolver and threatened others. He later escaped.

The woman then went to Nari Bari police outpost and informed the S-I about the incident. However, Subhash allegedly turned her away using harsh language. The victim returned home and her father informed his neighbours. Following this, the entire locality reached the police post and began demanding action against the culprit and the S-I.

The S-I then swung into action and raided Ilyas’ house. While he was not there, S-I brought his father, Shafiq, to the police post. The crowd, however, caught hold of Shafiq and thrashed him. He was later rescued by the police.

Locals also blocked Rewa Road, following which Circle Officer (Bara) Lal Pratap Singh, along with force from neighbouring stations, reached the spot. He assured residents of justice and informed the SSP of the alleged misbehaviour of the S-I. The S-I was transferred with immediate effect.

Lal Pratap Singh said that an FIR of outraging the modesty of a woman, voluntarily causing injury and robbery has been registered. “The FIR also alleges that Shafiq, Ilyas, Mansoor and Abrar had hatched a conspiracy to loot a chain.
It was in this connection that the incident of eve-teasing took place and the woman was beaten up. Shafiq and Ilyas have been arrested,” he added.

He, however, added that preliminary investigations indicated that Ilyas, who had earlier been booked for petty offences, had teased the woman. “When she objected, the accused slapped her. Further investigations are on,” said Singh.
