A Shahjahanpur court on Friday sentenced 35-year-old labourer Anil, alias Chameli, to death after finding him guilty of raping two minor sisters and murdering the elder child. The court described the crime as a “rarest of the rare” case. Anil has been in custody since his arrest shortly after the incident in February 2021.

According to the prosecution, on February 22, 2021, the two sisters, aged five and seven, went to a water tap nearrape their village primary school and did not return. Family members later found them unconscious in a field on the village outskirts and rushed them to hospital. Doctors declared the elder sister dead on arrival, while the younger child was admitted for treatment. Both children had sustained head injuries, the police said.

Investigators established that a local man, identified as Anil, had been the last person seen with the girls. He was taken into custody and, after interrogation, confessed to the crime, police said.

Government counsel Sanjeev Kumar Singh told the court that the accused had lured the children with biscuits and taken them to a field on the pretext of giving them honey, and that both girls were sexually assaulted before being struck with a blunt object.

“The investigation found that the accused had sexually assaulted both the girls and then struck them with a blunt object. Believing them to be dead, he left them lying in the field,” Singh said in court. A chargesheet was filed after the police completed their probe.

Ten prosecution witnesses were examined during the trial, authorities said. After reviewing the evidence and testimony, the court concluded the case met the threshold for the death penalty and pronounced the sentence.

“After reviewing the evidence and testimony, the court concluded that the case fell under the ‘rarest of rare’ category and sentenced Anil to death,” Singh said.
