With only nine days to go for the election to the post of Allahabad mayor, senior Congress leaders will be visiting the city to canvass for the Congress-supported candidate,Shiri Wadhawan.

On Tuesday, film star-turned MP and senior Congress leader Raj Babbar will hold road shows and address public meetings in her support.

District Congress core committee member Kishore Varshneya said Babbar will hold road shows in all the three city constituencies — City (North),City (West) and City (South) — which come under the purview of the Allahabad Municipal Corporation. “Right from the airport,he will be holding road shows in all three constituencies. He will also address two public meetings, including at Civil Lines,” said Varshneya.

Another senior leader and Union Minister for Coal,Sriprakash Jaiswal, will also be visiting the city for canvassing. “His schedule is yet to be finalised. But he will be visiting the city in the next few days,” said Varshneya.

State Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi, whose nominee Dr Satya Pandey had to withdraw her name as the Congress candidate following strong opposition from the lone Congress MLA from the city, will be in the city for canvassing on June 24.

Sources said the leaders’ presence would help in galvanising the workers, who have not been showing much enthusiasm, especially in the wake of infighting within the party.

Babbar is known to be close to Wadhawan’s husband,Ravi Wadhawan, who was the former mayor of Allahabad. He is also believed to have been instrumental in forwarding the name of Shiri Wadhawan.
