8 police officials in 3 west UP districts face action in rape, molestation and assault cases

The police officials who reached the spot rescued their colleague and took him for a medical examination but no case was registered till Monday morning. This prompted the villagers to stage a demonstration at the area police station. Senior police officials rushed to the spot and a case of rape and criminal trespass was lodged against the sub-inspector.

“Two CCTV cameras have been installed at the house of the victim, whose medical examination has confirmed that she was subjected to rape. The family members feared that they might face police pressure to withdraw the case following which we installed CCTVs at their house and also increased police strength in the village. Two cops accused of trying to shield the guilty policeman have also been suspended,” Deputy Commissioner of Police, West Zone, Agra, Sonum Kumar, said.

In the second case, Sambhal Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Singh Gunawat suspended and arrested two police constables on Wednesday evening for allegedly following the car of a woman SI returning home after duty early on Wednesday. Constables Pawan Chaudhary and Ravindra Kumar allegedly followed the car of the SI and forced the driver to stop the vehicle. As per the FIR, the constables, who were under the influence of liquor, abused the SI and made a bid to molest her. “Both the constables have been suspended and were arrested after lodging of the FIR,” Gunawat said.

In the third case in Rampur district, the in-charge of a police outpost was suspended and a deputy superintendent of police and a police inspector were removed from their posts following protests over alleged inaction in a rape case.

A schoolgirl was allegedly raped by two men from a minority community. The girl’s mother lodged an FIR against the in-charge of the local police outpost, saying that he came to their house on Wednesday morning and assaulted her and her daughter in a bid to put pressure on them to withdraw the case.

As news of the incident spread, dozens of students along with Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal activists laid siege to the jurisdictional police station and started reciting verses of the Hanuman Chalisa, demanding the arrest of the accused. Subsequently, the police arrested the two accused and took action against the police officials.

“The in-charge of the area police outpost who has been charged with beating the mother and the rape victim has been suspended while the in-charge of the police station where the demonstration took place and the deputy SP of the zone have been removed from their postings following the incident,” a senior Rampur police official said.
