Bareilly police on Sunday said they have arrested two men for allegedly beating up a 25-year-old Muslim youth inside a temple on Friday. They said Ishaan had gone to the temple to look for his neighour, a 35-year-old Hindu woman who had left home after an argument with her family.

After the video of the incident that took place in the cantonment area went viral on Saturday, police lodged an FIR against four persons.

“Ishaan suffered injuries and has been provided medical treatment. In the video, four persons are seen thrashing Ishaan. All the four persons have been identified. We have arrested two of them, identified as Aman Saxena and Himanshu Tandon — both in their 20s. Efforts are on to trace the other two accused,” said Station House Officer (Qila police station) Rajeev Kumar.

The four have been booked under IPC section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), said the officer.

According to police, Ishaan, who is also in his 20s, works in a private firm in Hyderabad and had recently come to visit his home. On Friday, his neighbour, a 28-year-old Hindu woman asked him to accompany her in searching her elder sister, who had left home after having an argument.

“While they were passing by a temple, the woman told Ishaan to check her sister in the temple. When they entered the temple premises, they found the elder sister sitting there… The two then started to convince her to return home. In the meantime, the four men arrived at the spot and started asking Ishan his identity. Suddenly, the accused four men started thrashing Ishaan. The two women tried to convince the accused, but they were not ready to listen. The matter was resolved when others intervened,” added the SHO.

Ishaan did not lodge a complaint with the police after the incident, said the officer, adding the FIR was registered after they came to know about the viral video.
