All the 37,000 street light points in Meerut municipal area are going to be replaced with Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). Meerut Municipal Corporation officials said the LEDs would reduce the electricity consumed by street lights by almost 60 per cent and so will save on monthly electricity bill.
LED lights are going to be installed in Meerut on a pilot basis in Uttar Pradesh and for that the Meerut Municipal Corporation (MMC) has tied up with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) to conduct a survey to find out the conditions,power consumption and output of street light points in the city. EESL is a joint venture of PSUs of the Ministry of Power,the Government of India.
Sources said the MMC has received a letter this week from EESL stating that its officials would soon visit Meerut to start the survey. Officials said that after the survey,bids would be invited to install LED lights on Public-Private Partnership model and installation of LED lights would begin by April.
Talking to The Sunday Express,Meerut Municipal Commissioner D K Singh said,All the street lights in Meerut are going to be replaced with LED lights. It will save energy and prove cost-effective. The assistant engineer,Meerut Municipal Corporation,SS Chauhan,said, Meerut corporation pays around Rs 65 lakh every month as electricity bill of 37,000 street lights. Once the LED lights are installed,power consumption would reduce by almost 60 per cent.
DK Singh and SS Chauhan were in Lucknow to participate in a workshop titled Service Level Bench Marking Under 13th Finance Commission.
An LED street light is an integrated LED light fixture that is more efficient compared to bulbs and tube lights of the same luminance currently in use.
