A second-YEAR MBBS student was found dead with injuries on his body in the basement of his hostel at a private medical college in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur on Sunday morning, police said.
The body of Sahil Shashwat (24), who hailed from Mathura, was spotted in a pool of blood when a security guard went to the hostel basement of Rama Medical College in the morning, they said.
The guard alerted the college administration which informed the police. Sahil had injuries on his head and other parts of the body, it is learnt. The police said some of the injuries could be caused by a sharp-edged weapon. The postmortem would be conducted by a panel of doctors and it would be videographed, the police said.
Kanpur Additional Commissioner of Police Akash Patel said, “The picture will be clear once we get the post-mortem report.”
Another police official said they have not found any clue that the victim had a dispute with any hostel student so far. They are questioning Sahil’s room partner.
Police also examined the hostel CCTV footage where the victim is seen moving around till 1.45 am. Kanpur Joint Commissioner of Police Anand Prakash Tiwari said, “We have found no one from outside entered the hostel.” The police said they had not lodged an FIR and would take a call after receiving the autopsy report.
The police claimed Sahil celebrated his birthday in the hostel Thursday even as it was on Friday. The statements of students in hostel are also being recorded. Liquor bottles were brought to the hostel Thursday but they were disposed of by hostellers before the police arrived, officials claimed. The college administration could not be contacted for comments.
