A DAY after a 14-year-old rape victim gave birth to a child at a hospital, a 28-year-old man was booked on rape charge, the Unnao police said on Saturday.
The newborn is in the custody of the district Child Welfare Committee (CWC) as the girl and her family members refused to accept the child, police said.
The girl and the child are undergoing treatment at a hospital, where their condition is stable, said police. A search is on for the accused.
Police said after the girl and her family refused to accept the child, doctors informed Unnao CWC chairperson Preeti Singh.
“I sent my team to the hospital for verification and then took custody of the newborn after completing the formalities. We admitted the child at the Special Newborn Care Unit and got an FIR registered against the accused for sexually assaulting the minor,” Singh said. In their police complaint, the girl’s family alleged that the accused sexually assaulted her on several occasions, leading to her pregnancy. “The family did not approach us earlier. We came to know about the crime Friday and registered an FIR against the accused on rape charge and under the POCSO Act,” a police officer said.
