Three members of a family, including a 27-year-old woman, were shot dead over a land dispute in Karhal area of Mainpuri district on Monday afternoon, said police. A woman was also injured in the firing.
According to police, the families of the deceased and the accused are distant relatives and their houses are located next to each other.
“During the preliminary inquiry, it has come to light that Rahul Yadav, the neighbour of Rameshwar Dayal, had carried out the murder. A murder case has been lodged against nine members of Rahul Yadav’s family, including him. The role of other members of the family is also being probed. No one has been arrested so far,” Circle Officer (Mainpuri) Chandrakesh Singh said.
Among the dead were 75-year-old Rameshwar Dayal, his 52-year-old son Kayam Singh Yadav, and daughter-in-law Mamta Devi (28). Rameshwar Dayal’s other daughter-in-law Saroj Devi (40) was injured in the firing and has been admitted to a hospital.
Police said that for the last few months, the two families have been quarrelling over the exit path between their houses. On Sunday, the two families quarrelled again and the matter was resolved after the intervention of people in the neighbourhood. No complaint was filed, said police.
According to police, the assailants, who were on a motorbike, opened fire at Kayam while he was on his way to a shop. After shooting him, the assailants reached Kayam’s residence and started firing at family members. After the family started shouting, the assailants fled.
