The last Amrit Snan of this year’s Maha Kumbh concluded on Monday with an estimated around 2.5 crore people taking dip in the Sangam in Prayagraj on the occasion of Basant Panchami.

In the wake of a stampede on January 29 during the Mauni Amavasya Amrit Snan that left at least 30 people dead and 60 others injured, the UP government had taken a range of measures, including raised barricades, wire fencing, early bathing plans for akharas and deployment of additional central and state forces for better crowd management.

The Monday’s Amrit Snan on Basant Panchami kept the entire administration, right from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to all the senior officials of the government, on their toes. Officials said that CM Adityanath personally monitored the crowd movement from 3.30 am till monks of all the major akharas had taken bath by Monday afternoon.

In a post on X, Chief Minister Adityanath congratulated all those taking part in the Amrit Snan. “Greetings to all saints, akharas, kalpvasis and devotees who have taken the holy dip,” CM Adityanath wrote.

DIG (Maha Kumbh) Vaibhav Krishna, who along with other senior officers went around the area on horseback to assess crowd management, said: “Everything is running smoothly today… Our crowd management has been good…is visible. No untoward incident has been reported from anywhere. Additional deployment has been made at the pressure points.”

At the break of dawn, thousands of sadhus from various akharas, led by their mahamandaleshwars in decorated chariots, marched barefoot towards the Triveni Sangam.

To ensure that no outsider entered the route of the sadhus from their camps to the Sangam nose for Amrit Snan, the Mela administration had completely barricaded the area.

By 9.30 am, seven major akharas had completed their rituals at the Sangam with each allotted 40 minutes. The remaining six akaharas completed their bath by around 3 pm.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (Prayagraj) Shailendra Singh Parihar said all roads leading to the Kumbh area have been declared no-vehicle zones.

With the conclusion of all three amrit snan, there are two major snan days left — Magh Purnima on February 12 and Maha Shivratri on February 26. The Maha Kumbh will end on Maha Shivratri.
