The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has started the exercise to develop a new venue for holding dharnas on an area of 25,000 square metre at Gomti bank near Lucknow University at a cost of Rs 3 crore.
Officials said the new dharna sthal will have enough space for at least 20,000 people to stage their protests or raise their demands. The venue which will be ready by February-end will have four platforms to address the gatherings.
The officials said the venue will have a fencing along the river to avoid any untoward incident. There will be a parking place and a police booth near the site.
The new dharna sthal would be a major relief for commuters who have to face problems whenever a large gathering takes place or agitators turn violent at the existing site at Shaheed Smarak on Mahatma Gandhi Marg.
The new dharna sthal is part of Gomti Riverfront Development Project, the Detailed Project Report of which is in final stage. The riverfront project involves making a channel for the river through its 14-km stretch and developing various public utility facilities on the bank. The existing dharna sthal has space for maximum 400 persons. It becomes a tough task for the district administration, police and fire tenders to control the gathering if it turns violent and people come on the road, said an official.
