The festival of Holi claimed at least 12 lives in Lucknow. While 10 persons were brought dead to the Trauma Centre of the CSM Medical University on Sunday,two others died later. Doctors said accidents caused by drunken driving led to most of these deaths.
Besides,hundreds of others were injured in road accidents and clashes. While many were released after first aid,several were still undergoing treatment in various hospitals. Among them were many with bullet wounds suffered during Holi clashes.
Of those brought dead to the Trauma Centre on Sunday,10 had died in Holi-related incidents,most of them in road accidents, said Dr Ajay Singh,Medical Superintendent of CSMMU.
Apart from them,at least 53 Holi-related patients were admitted,but all of them were saved by timely treatment given at the Trauma Centre, he added. In addition,the Trauma Centre attended to 160 patients who had come with minor injuries on Sunday.
Of the 10 brought dead,five were from Lucknow. One died and four others were injured in an accident in Banthara area where their car rolled off the road. Two others died and one was injured when two motorcycles collided in Gosaiganj area. Another died in Bakshi ka Talaab area when a bike collided with a roadways bus,while a fifth died in Gosaiganj area when his bike hit a tree.
Two persons,who were injured in road accidents in Ambedkarnagar and Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar,were also brought to the Trauma Centre,but were declared brought dead.
Another victim,32-year-old Ram Kumar Sahu,was found dead in a drain in Mohanlalganj area on Monday. Police said he fell into the drain after getting drunk on Sunday evening.
A five-year-old girl Sania succumbed to her injury on Monday at the Trauma Centre. She had fallen into a ditch while playing Holi,said doctors.
A number of cases of fire arms injuries suffered in Holi clashes were also brought at the Trauma Centre on Sunday and Monday. Nine of them are critical,having injuries in the abdomen,chest and head.
Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Hospital also received people injured in drunken driving and Holi clashes. A total of 334 cases were attended to in the Emergency ward,of which 32 were admitted. As many as 111 of these were road accident cases,and at least eight of burns cases,said Dr EU Siddiqui,chief medical superintendent.
We had four or five cases of drunk men who needed hospitalisation. Most of the other patients were injured in drunken driving and other road accidents. At least three of them suffered limb fractures, said Dr Jamshed Nasim,emergency officer on duty on Sunday.
Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital also attended to 160 cases. Nineteen of the patients had to be admitted,but most of them are recovering,said Dr ML Bhargava,the medical superintendent. Similarly,Balrampur Hospital attended to 152 patients,of which 55 were admitted. As many as 21 of these were cases of injuries in road accidents,said Dr I Saran,the chief medical superintendent.
