A month after Daliganj resident Laxmi Shankar Shukla (24) lost his legs in an accident, his family is finding hard to meet the expenses of his treatment. The accident was caused by a “red-beaconed” government vehicle in the Madioan area in Lucknow.

“During the last month, over Rs 70,000 has been spent over his treatment. We have borrowed money from almost every relative,” Shukla’s elder brother Anand said.

“Despite a government vehicle being involved in the accident, there has been no help from the government,” Anand, who runs a small shop, said. “And the accused in the case — the erring driver — is out on bail.”

On the night of December 9,Shukla,a distributor of ITC products, was hit while going home on a bicycle in the outskirts of the city. Leaving the victim and the vehicle on the spot, the driver had fled. He was later arrested and released on bail by a city court.

The police have recorded the statement of several persons, including the victim,in the case. A letter was sent to the Estate Department to know to which government department the vehicle belonged.

“In its reply, the Estate Department said the vehicle belonged to the State Integration Council (SIC),” Madioan police station in-charge Anupam Singh said. “The statements of the Estate Department employees are yet to be recorded.”

Shukla is admitted in the surgical ward of the Chatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University.
