Lab to produce tissue cultured banana plants

The state department of science and technology has established a tissue culture laboratory in view of the increasing demand for tissue cultured banana plants in the state.

The laboratory will run on public-private partnership for mass production of banana plants with tissue culture technology. The laboratory is ready to be handed over to the private firm by the end of this month and is expected to become operational by the first week of April.

The lab,the first of its kind to be established by the state government,has been built in the Bakshi Ka Talaab locality in the outskirts of Lucknow. A total of Rs 1.5 crore has been spent in establishing the lab,which will be handed over fully furnished to Hindustan Bioenergy Limited.

BL Meena,Principal Secretary,Science and Technology,Uttar Pradesh,said,“The benefit of a tissue cultured plant is that it produces plants of good variety and gives almost equal produce. Hence,in spite of being slightly expensive,it is much in demand.”
