An FIR has been registered against an IPS officer and six of his family members and friends on charges of dowry harassment and mental cruelty against his wife, a practising doctor in Noida, police said.
The case was registered against Shivanshu Rajput, a 2019-batch IPS officer posted as superintendent of police (SP) with the State Crime Record Bureau in Bengaluru, Karnataka, and his family members on the complaint of his wife Dr Kriti Singh, a resident of Jaypee Wishtown, Noida.
The couple, who got married in December 2021, has a two-year-old son.
The accused will be questioned soon, police said.
The complainant has alleged that she has been facing harassment since her marriage.
“The complainant accused her husband and seven other people of harassing her for dowry ever since her marriage,” said Bhupendra Singh, Station House Officer (SHO), Sector 126 police station.
Dr Kriti has said her family spent over Rs 2 crore on her wedding, including jewellery worth several lakh rupees. Soon after the marriage, her husband began harassing her, and when she resisted, her in-laws also joined in, she said.
The doctor also accused her husband of having relations with other women. When she confronted him, he threatened to abandon her, she claimed in the complaint.
Police said the FIR was registered after the complainant approached the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Women’s Safety), Gautam Buddha Nagar.
The complainant is currently living separately with her son.
The matter is under investigation and statements of the seven accused are yet to be recorded, based on which further action will take place, officials said.
