The Congress on Wednesday said that a 28-year-old party worker from Gorakhpur died during a protest in Lucknow, claiming that “police brutality” caused his death. The Uttar Pradesh Police, in a statement, denied the charge, saying the youth was last seen at the Congress party office, where he was found unconscious and no external injury marks were found on his body.
Meanwhile, the family of the deceased, Prabhat Pandey, got a murder FIR registered against “unidentified persons”.
As part of its nationwide protest against the BJP government’s policies at the Centre and the state, the Congress had planned to gherao the Vidhan Sabha. However, with most of its leaders allegedly detained a night ago, a group of party workers, led by UP Congress chief Ajay Rai, marched from the party office to the Assembly. Stopped by the police, the Congress workers tried to barge in, leading to a clash.
The Congress alleged that Pandey, who was also taking part in the protest, died after he was injured in the clash with police.
“During the scuffle with police, Youth Congress worker Prabhat Pandey died… The responsibility for this lies with the Yogi Adityanath government and the state police,” said Ajay Rai and demanded a financial aid of `1 crore to Pandey’s family and a government job to the kin.
The police said that the post-mortem will be conducted by a panel of doctors and it will be videographed.
