In a case of mistaken identity,man killed in police firing

The family members of the victim have lodged a complaint with the local police Tuesday alleging murder by the policemen.

A 22-year-old man was killed in Shahjahanpur district’s Katra police station area after two policemen allegedly opened fire on him suspecting to be a criminal. The family members of the victim have lodged a complaint with the local police Tuesday alleging murder by the policemen.

Police claimed that the incident took place Monday night and the injured was rushed to a hospital in Bareilly where he succumbed to his injuries late in the night.

Police said the man identified as Om Prakash,a resident of Meeranpur Katra town,used to work as a farm labourer.

Police said Om Prakash was walking with his two friends at a secluded place near the town Monday night when he was stopped by the two policemen,who were patrolling the area after a recent car robbery.

Police said Om Prakash and friends tried to flee after hearing the policemen’s call and fired at the policemen. The two policemen in retaliation also fired and later found Om Prakash with gunshot injuries,police claimed.

DIG (Bareilly Range) R K S Rathore said Om Prakash was perhaps killed by the bullets fired by the policemen. He said while prima facie there is no indication of any foul play by the policemen, this angle is also under investigation as per the complaint of the family members of the deceased youth.

“A judicial inquiry is to be conducted. We have videographed the postmortem process and all mandatory procedures are being followed to find out the truth,” Rathore said.

He said the policemen had been patrolling in the area where a car had been robbed and its driver shot at by some criminals.
