A 45-year-old platoon commander of Uttar Pradesh Homeguard was found hanging from a tree on the campus of Bhamora police station in Bareilly district on Thursday morning.
Platoon commander Ramchandra Verma, a resident of a village near Bhamora, had been sent to the area as part of a reserve team for security during Thursday’s panchayat elections.
Aonla Circle Officer Kushal Pal Singh said no suicide note was recovered from the spot and it is not clear why he committed suicide.
Bhamora station officer Rakesh Kumar Singh said Verma was found hanging with a scarf at around 8 am. He claimed that Verma’s brother has told the police that the death was an accident.
Bareilly district homeguard commandant Abhilekh Narayan said said Verma did not come across as someone who could commit suicide.
